Rural women work more because rural poverty compels them to earn and because farm and family activities easily absorb their labour, often as unpaid helpers. Urban jobs demand more education and skills and face social barriers, so fewer urban women are counted as workers.

Concept first

The worker-population ratio for women is higher in rural areas than in urban areas. This reflects both the compulsions of poverty and the kind of work available in each setting.

Reasons more rural women work

  • Economic necessity / poverty: Many rural households are poor and cannot survive on the earnings of the men alone, so women too must work to add to family income.
  • Nature of agricultural work: Farming and allied activities (livestock, sowing, weeding, harvesting) can absorb the labour of all family members, so women readily join in as cultivators, agricultural labourers or unpaid family helpers.
  • Family enterprises: In a family farm or business, women's work is easily included, so a large number of them get recorded as workers.
