Compiler and assembler are programming tools (language translators), Ubuntu is system software (an operating system), and a text editor is application software for the end user.

The classification idea. Software falls into three buckets by whom it serves:

  • System software runs the machine itself — operating systems, device drivers, system utilities. It works even if no user application is open.
  • Programming tools serve the programmer — the software used to create other software: language translators (compiler, interpreter, assembler), debuggers, editors bundled in IDEs.
  • Application software serves the end user's everyday task — writing a document, browsing, playing media.

Classifying each item

  • a) Compiler → Programming tool. It translates a whole high-level-language program (C, C++) into machine code. Its only purpose is software development, the defining trait of a programming tool.
  • b) Assembler → Programming tool. Same role one level lower: it translates assembly-language mnemonics into machine code — again a developer's translator.
  • c) Ubuntu → System software. Ubuntu is a Linux-based operating system: it manages the hardware resources and provides the user interface — the textbook definition of system software. …
