Each part named in this activity illustrates one of the chapter's own bone-classification categories — flat (skull), long (clavicle, fingers, toes), sesamoid (kneecap) and short (foot/ankle tarsals).

Working in your group of five, assign one part to each member and label every bone you can identify:

  • Skull: the cranial bones are flat bones, joined together by immovable suture joints — label as many individual cranial bones as your reference figure shows.
  • Clavicle: a single long bone (the collarbone), connecting the sternum to the shoulder.
  • Kneecap: the patella, the chapter's one named example of a sesamoid bone — a small, round bone embedded in a tendon.
  • Fingers and palm: the phalanges (finger bones) and metacarpals (palm bones) — both long bones, shaped so the hand can form a fist, as the chapter notes. …
