Creating an Aadhaar card requires proof of identity, proof of address, and a biometric scan — all linked to a single individual through a unique 12-digit number.

The Aadhaar card is India’s foundational identity document, issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). It is not just a card; it is a digital identity that verifies who you are, where you live, and that you are a unique individual — no duplicates, no fakes. To create one, you need to provide three categories of attributes: demographic, biometric, and supporting documents.

Demographic attributes are the basic personal details you supply during enrolment. These include your full name, date of birth (or age declared), gender, and your residential address. You also give a mobile number and email address if you have them, though these are optional. The key here is that your name and address must match the documents you submit as proof — consistency is everything.

Biometric attributes are what make Aadhaar unique to you. During enrolment, the operator captures ten fingerprints (all fingers, one by one), two iris scans (left and right eye), and a photograph of your face. These biometrics are checked against the entire UIDAI database to ensure no one else has enrolled with the same prints or irises — this is the “de-duplication” step that guarantees each Aadhaar belongs to one person only.

Important

Biometrics are the core of Aadhaar’s uniqueness. Without them, the system cannot verify that you are not already enrolled under a different name or address.

Supporting documents are the physical or digital proofs you must carry to the enrolment centre. You need at least one proof of identity (PoI) and one proof of address (PoA). Commonly accepted PoI documents include a Passport, Voter ID (EPIC), Driving Licence, PAN Card, or a government-issued photo ID. For PoA, you can use a Passport, Bank Statement, Ration Card, Voter ID, Driving Licence, or a utility bill (electricity, water, gas) not older than three months. If you are a minor (below 5 years), you can enrol using your parent’s Aadhaar as both identity and address proof — no separate documents needed. …
