Introduction

The world around us has changed dramatically because of digital technologies. These changes have made life more convenient, faster, and easier to handle. Think about how communication worked before: a letter would take days to reach someone, and each recipient would get their own copy and respond separately. Today, you can send an email to multiple people at once, and they all receive it instantly. That instantaneous nature of electronic communication has made us far more efficient and productive.

The impact of digital technologies is not limited to personal communication. From banking to aviation, from industrial production to e-commerce — especially in how goods and services are delivered — every sector now depends on computers and digital technologies. Applications of these technologies have redefined and evolved all spheres of human activity. More and more people are using digital technologies through smartphones, computers, and high-speed Internet.

Why did digital technologies become so widespread? The key reason is the introduction of personal computers (PCs) and the Internet, followed by smartphones. These inventions brought digital technology to the common person.

But while we enjoy the benefits, these technologies can also be misused. This chapter looks at the impact of digital technologies on society and the best practices that can ensure a productive and safe digital environment for us.

Note

The quote by Stephen Hawking at the start of the chapter — "I think computer viruses should count as life. I think it says something about human nature that the only form of life we have created so far is purely destructive. We’ve created life in our own image." — reminds us that technology can be used for harm as well as good. This sets the tone for the chapter: we must understand both the positive and negative societal impacts of digital technologies.
