Tourism is the activity of travelling to, and staying in, places away from one's usual place of residence, for leisure, business, pilgrimage, medical treatment or other purposes, for a limited period. As a service business, tourism is really a chain of interlinked services — transportation, accommodation, food and beverages, travel-agency and tour-operator services, guides and interpreters, and entertainment — that together create the visitor's overall experience.
Tourism is broadly classified into domestic tourism (Indian residents travelling within India) and international/inbound tourism (foreign visitors travelling to India), and further, by purpose, into categories such as leisure tourism, business tourism (including MICE — Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions), pilgrimage tourism, medical tourism (foreign patients travelling to India for comparatively low-cost, high-quality medical treatment) and eco-tourism. …
