Micro enterprises are the smallest MSME category; examples include a tailoring unit and a pottery/handicraft unit.

In the Tamil Nadu HSC Class-11 Commerce syllabus, MSMEs are classified (2020 revised norms) as micro, small and medium by investment and turnover. A micro enterprise is one with investment in plant/machinery or equipment up to Rs. 1 crore and annual turnover up to Rs. 5 crore. Because the scale is very small, such units are usually run by one owner or a family with a few workers.
