Micro enterprises are the smallest category of MSME, run on very low investment and turnover; typical examples are handicraft, food-processing, repair and small service units run by an individual or a family.

Under the revised MSME classification followed in the Tamil Nadu HSC Commerce syllabus, a micro enterprise is one where the investment in plant and machinery or equipment does not exceed one crore rupees and the annual turnover does not exceed five crore rupees. Because the scale is so small, these units are usually owned by one person or a family and employ only a few workers.

Common examples include:

  • Food and processing units — bakeries, confectioneries, papad, pickle and masala making units.
  • Handicraft and cottage units — pottery, handloom weaving, khadi and village industries, cane and bamboo products, toy making.
  • Repair and service units — cycle, two-wheeler, mobile and electrical/electronic repair shops. …
