Human wants are grouped into necessaries, comforts and luxuries, with necessaries sub-divided into those for existence, for efficiency and conventional ones.

In the Tamil Nadu HSC Class-11 Economics syllabus, the study of consumption begins with the nature and classification of human wants. Wants are classified as:

1. Necessaries — goods and services essential for living and working. They are of three kinds:
   • Necessaries of existence (life) — food, clothing, shelter, without which one cannot survive.
   • Necessaries of efficiency — items that raise a worker's productive capacity, e.g. nutritious food, education, transport.
