(a) 'The features of the Rural Economy are peculiar' - Argue. The rural economy has several distinctive characteristics that set it apart from the urban economy, justifying the statement:
- Dependence on agriculture — agriculture and allied activities are the main source of income and employment.
- Dependence on the monsoon — farming relies heavily on rainfall, so incomes are uncertain and fluctuate with the weather.
- Disguised (hidden) unemployment — more people work on land than are actually needed, so their marginal productivity is near zero.
- Small and fragmented land holdings — holdings are small, scattered and subdivided, which lowers efficiency.
- Low productivity and low income — traditional methods, poor inputs and small holdings keep output and incomes low, often at subsistence level.
- Subsistence economy — much of what is produced is consumed by the farm family itself rather than sold.
- Rural indebtedness — farmers borrow heavily, often from moneylenders at high interest, and remain in debt.
- Traditional outlook and joint family system — customs, traditions and joint families strongly influence economic life.
- Poor infrastructure — inadequate roads, electricity, credit, marketing and storage facilities. Because of these features, the rural economy is genuinely peculiar and distinct from the urban, industrial economy.
(b) Tourism and Transport system in Tamil Nadu.
Tourism. Tamil Nadu is one of India's leading tourist destinations, drawing large numbers of domestic and foreign tourists:
- Temple / heritage tourism — famous temples and monuments at Madurai (Meenakshi temple), Thanjavur (Brihadeeswarar temple), Rameswaram, Kancheepuram and the shore temples of Mamallapuram (a UNESCO site).
- Hill stations — Ooty (Udhagamandalam), Kodaikanal and Yercaud.
- Beaches and coastal tourism — Marina beach (Chennai), Mamallapuram and Kanyakumari.
- Medical tourism — Chennai is a major centre for affordable, high-quality healthcare. …
