Binary-to-octal needs no arithmetic — group the bits in threes from the RIGHT (since 8 = 2^3), padding the left with zeros, and convert each 3-bit group to one octal digit.

Why grouping works. One octal digit encodes exactly 3 bits, so regrouping the bit string re-labels the same number in base 8.

Working for (10101100)2:

Pad to a multiple of 3:  010 101 100
Convert each group    :   2   5   4
=> (10101100)2 = (254)8

Verification — both sides equal the same decimal value:

(10101100)2 = 128 + 32 + 8 + 4      = 172 …
