The concept (cyber crimes and their legal provisions). The IT Act 2000, as amended in 2008, criminalises the fraudulent use of another person's electronic identifiers and computer-based cheating. Two sections matter for both crimes below: Section 66C (punishment for identity theft: fraudulently or dishonestly using someone's electronic signature, password or any unique identification — imprisonment up to 3 years and fine up to Rs. 1 lakh) and Section 66D (punishment for cheating by personation using a computer resource — imprisonment up to 3 years and fine up to Rs. 1 lakh).

a) Identity theft — a victim scenario (example)

I received an email, apparently from my school, saying my portal password would expire and I must "re-verify" via a link. The look-alike page captured my user-ID and password. Within days: my email password was changed, and a fake social-media profile using my name and photo messaged my friends asking for money. My login credentials — my digital identity — were stolen and used to impersonate me.

Provisions: Section 66C directly covers the fraudulent use of my password/unique IDs; Section 66D covers the impersonation used to cheat my friends. Remedy: change all passwords, alert contacts, report the profile to the platform, and file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in or the local cyber cell.

While paying on an unfamiliar shopping site, I entered my card number, expiry, CVV and OTP on what turned out to be a fraudulent page. The next statement showed online purchases of about Rs. 15,000 that I never made — my card account details had been stolen and used. …
