Step 1. Size. Plant cells are usually larger than animal cells; animal cells are usually smaller than plant cells.

Step 2. Cell wall and plasmodesmata. Plant cells have a cell wall in addition to the plasma membrane, made of a middle lamella plus primary and secondary walls, with plasmodesmata connecting adjacent cells; animal cells have no cell wall and no plasmodesmata at all.

Step 3. Plastids and vacuole. Plant cells have plastids, most notably the chloroplast; animal cells have none. Plant cells have one large, permanent vacuole bounded by a tonoplast; animal cells, if they have vacuoles at all, have only small, temporary ones, and lack a tonoplast entirely.

Step 4. Centrioles, nucleus position and lysosomes. Plant cells generally lack centrioles, except in the motile cells of certain lower plants, whereas animal cells possess centrioles. The nucleus tends to sit along the periphery of a plant cell but nearer the centre of an animal cell. Lysosomes are rare in plant cells but a regular, common feature of animal cells. …
