Phagocytosis is bulk uptake of solid material by a cell, so it is called "cell eating"; the parallel uptake of liquids/dissolved substances is pinocytosis, or "cell drinking."

Endocytosis is the process by which cells take in material from outside by forming vesicles from the plasma membrane. It has two main forms:
