Step 1. An appropriate photoperiod completed within one 24-hour cycle counts as a single inductive cycle, and different species need different numbers of these cycles before flowering is triggered - Xanthium (a short-day plant) needs only one inductive cycle, while Plantago (a long-day plant) needs around 25.

Step 2. Photoperiodic induction is the name given to the resulting conversion of vegetative leaf primordia into flower primordia once the plant has received enough inductive cycles.

Step 3. Crucially, the site that actually perceives the photoperiodic light stimulus is the leaf, not the shoot apex that eventually produces the flower.

Step 4. This was demonstrated on Cocklebur (Xanthium pensylvanicum), a short-day plant: a fully defoliated plant kept under short-day conditions fails to flower at all, showing that leaves are needed to perceive the stimulus.

Step 5. A plant with even a single leaf retained under short-day conditions still flowers, and a plant with only one leaf exposed to short-day conditions while the rest of the plant experiences long days also still flowers - showing that the stimulus perceived by just one leaf is enough to trigger flowering at the distant apex. …
