Diffuse porous wood has evenly sized, evenly scattered vessels throughout the growth ring; ring porous wood has large early-wood vessels and small late-wood vessels, forming a visibly marked ring.

When secondary xylem (wood) is examined in transverse section, trees can be classified based on how the vessels (pores) are distributed within each annual growth ring:

FeatureDiffuse Porous WoodRing Porous Wood
Vessel sizeRoughly uniform in size throughout the growth ringDistinctly larger in early (spring) wood, much smaller in late (summer/autumn) wood
Vessel distributionEvenly scattered (diffused) across the entire growth ring, with no sharp size transitionSharply differentiated: a ring of large pores at the start of the season's growth, followed by smaller pores
Growth ring visibilityGrowth ring boundaries are less sharply defined based on vessel size aloneGrowth rings are very distinctly visible because of the abrupt change in vessel size
