Studying growth rings lets us determine a tree's age, reconstruct historical climate patterns, date old wooden objects, and judge timber quality — a science called dendrochronology.

In trees growing in regions with distinct seasons, the vascular cambium alternates between producing wide-vesseled, light-coloured spring wood (during the favourable growing season) and narrow-vesseled, dark, dense autumn wood (as conditions become less favourable). Each spring–autumn pair together forms one visible growth ring (annual ring), so counting rings from the centre (pith) to the bark of a cross-section normally tells us the tree's age in years.

The study and interpretation of growth rings — dendrochronology — has several important applications:

  1. Age determination: since (in temperate/seasonal climates) one ring generally corresponds to one year of growth, counting rings gives an accurate estimate of a tree's age.
  2. Climate reconstruction (dendroclimatology): the width of each ring reflects how favourable that year's growing conditions were — wider rings indicate years with abundant rainfall/warmth, narrower rings indicate drought or cold years — so a long sequence of rings can be used to reconstruct past climate patterns over centuries. …
