Apical meristem: Located at the very tip (apex) of the main root and the main shoot, and also at the tips of their branches. It is responsible for primary growth — the increase in the length of the plant (root and shoot elongation). The shoot apical meristem also gives rise to new leaves and lateral buds.

Intercalary meristem: Located between regions of permanent (mature) tissue, most typically at the base of the internodes or at the base of leaves, especially in monocots like grasses. It also contributes to primary growth (elongation), allowing, for instance, rapid regrowth of grass after cutting or grazing, since it lies below the cut region.
