On strong heating, calcium carbonate decomposes into calcium oxide (quicklime) and carbon dioxide gas: CaCO3 --(heat)--> CaO + CO2.

Calcium carbonate (limestone, CaCO3) undergoes thermal decomposition (calcination) when strongly heated to about 1200 K (around 900-1000 degrees C). The ionic carbonate breaks down, releasing carbon dioxide gas and leaving behind calcium oxide (quicklime):

CaCO3(s) --(Delta, ~1200 K)--> CaO(s) + CO2(g)
