Plaster of Paris (CaSO4.half-H2O), made by heating gypsum, sets into a hard mass with water and is widely used in medicine, construction, and art.

Plaster of Paris is calcium sulphate hemihydrate, CaSO4.half-H2O, obtained by heating gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) at about 393 K. When mixed with water, it re-hydrates and sets into a hard mass (recrystallising back to CaSO4.2H2O), expanding very slightly as it sets -- a property that makes it useful for taking sharp mould impressions.

Uses:

  1. Medicine: making plaster casts to immobilise and support fractured/broken bones.
  2. Dentistry and surgery: taking dental impressions and surgical bandage plaster.
  3. Building/construction: making false ceilings, smoothing/finishing walls, decorative moulding, and as an ingredient in cement. …
