The radius of gyration K is the effective distance from the axis of rotation at which the body's whole mass can be imagined to be concentrated while keeping the same moment of inertia: K = √(I/M).

For a rigid body of mass M with moment of inertia I about a given axis, the radius of gyration K is defined as the distance from the axis at which, if the entire mass M of the body were concentrated as a single point mass, the moment of inertia about that axis would remain the same, I.

Mathematically:

I = MK^2

so

K = √(I/M)
