When a body is made to oscillate by a continuously applied external periodic force (rather than left to oscillate on its own), it undergoes forced oscillation, vibrating at the driving frequency rather than its natural frequency.

If a body capable of oscillation is subjected to an external periodic force that keeps acting on it throughout the motion, the body no longer oscillates at its own natural frequency; instead, after the initial transient dies out, it settles into oscillating steadily at the frequency of the applied (driving) force. This is called forced oscillation.
