A surface is said to be wetted by a liquid when the angle of contact is small (acute); this angle of contact is the property that determines wettability.

When a liquid is placed in contact with a solid surface, the shape the liquid takes at the edge (whether it spreads out or beads up) is determined by the angle of contact θ, measured between the tangent to the liquid surface and the solid surface at the point of contact.

If θ is small (liquid spreads readily, e.g. water on clean glass) the surface is said to be well-wetted by the liquid. If θ is large (obtuse, e.g. water on a greasy or waxed surface, or mercury on glass) the liquid does not wet the surface and tends to form beads.
