Q.Define the angle of contact between a liquid and a solid surface. Explain, in terms of the relative strength of the cohesive force (between the liquid's own molecules) and the adhesive force (between the liquid and the solid), why the angle of contact of water with clean glass is small (acute) while that of mercury with glass is large (obtuse).

The angle of contact, θ\theta, is the angle, measured inside the liquid, between the tangent to the liquid surface and the tangent to the solid surface, at the line where the liquid, solid, and surrounding air all meet.

Its value is determined by comparing two forces: the liquid's cohesive force (attraction between its own molecules) and the adhesive force (attraction between the liquid's molecules and the solid's molecules).

If adhesion exceeds cohesion, the liquid molecules are pulled more strongly toward the solid surface than toward each other, so the liquid spreads out and clings to the solid -- it wets the surface, and the angle of contact is small (acute), often close to 0°0°. Water on clean glass is the standard example: water molecules adhere to glass more strongly than they cohere to each other, so water spreads into a thin film with a small angle of contact. …
