About 10% of the fluid that leaks out of blood capillaries into the tissues is picked up not by the capillary's own venous end but by a separate network of thin-walled tubes, the lymphatic vessels; once inside these vessels, this fluid is called lymph.
Step 2. State its return function. Lymph's core job is to drain this excess tissue fluid back into the bloodstream - it passes through progressively larger collecting ducts and finally empties into the subclavian veins beneath the collar bone, restoring the fluid balance between blood and tissues.
Step 3. State its filtering/immune function. Before rejoining the blood, lymph must pass through at least one lymph node, where macrophage-lined sinusoids filter out and destroy invading microorganisms, preventing them from reaching the general blood supply; lymph nodes are especially concentrated in the neck, groin, armpits and along the respiratory and digestive tracts.
Step 4. State its cell-transport function. Lymph carries lymphocytes, which travel through the lymphatic fluid, enter the arterial blood, and are continually recycled back into the lymphatic system - linking lymph directly to immune surveillance. …
