Before Darwin, species were largely regarded (following earlier taxonomists) as fixed and unchanging entities, each separately and specially created, sharing an unchanging set of characters.
Darwin proposed that within any population there is natural, heritable variation among individuals; those individuals with variations better suited to their environment survive and reproduce more successfully (natural selection, 'survival of the fittest'). Over many generations, the accumulation of favourable variations can lead a population to diverge enough from its ancestral population to become a new species — a process he called 'descent with modification'.
