Q.What is Startup India?
Startup India is a flagship Central Government initiative launched on 16 January 2016. It is administered by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and is aimed at building a strong, self-sustaining ecosystem for innovation-driven new enterprises in India, rather than simply handing out one type of loan.
An enterprise that meets DPIIT's eligibility conditions can apply for DPIIT recognition as a 'startup'. Recognition unlocks the scheme's core benefits: a tax exemption for three consecutive financial years out of the first ten years since incorporation under Section 80-IAC of the Income Tax Act; access to capital indirectly through the Fund of Funds for Startups, a corpus operated through SIDBI that invests in venture capital funds which in turn invest in startups; and simplified, self-certification-based compliance under specified labour and environment laws, which reduces the regulatory burden a young firm faces in its early years.
By combining tax relief, indirect access to venture capital, and lighter compliance, Startup India tries to remove three of the most common obstacles — cash flow pressure, lack of growth capital, and regulatory complexity — that stop a good business idea from becoming a functioning enterprise.
Startup India (launched 16 January 2016, run by DPIIT) is the Central Government's umbrella initiative that recognises eligible new enterprises as 'startups' and gives them a three-year tax exemption, access to the Fund of Funds for Startups, and simplified regulatory compliance.
