Haustoria are specialised absorptive, peg- or root-like outgrowths developed by parasitic plants (e.g. Cuscuta, a total stem parasite; Viscum and Loranthus, partial stem parasites) or by parasitic fungi, which penetrate the tissues of a living host plant and establish a direct physiological connection with the host's vascular tissue (xylem and/or phloem).
