Co-evolution is reciprocal, interdependent evolutionary change between two interacting species over time.

Co-evolution refers to the process where two species that interact closely (such as a plant and its pollinator, a herbivore and its host plant, or a predator and its prey) influence each other's evolution: a change in one species creates a new selective pressure on the other, which then evolves an adaptive response, which in turn selects for a further change in the first species, and so on.

Classic examples of plant-related co-evolution include the close match between the shape and depth of a flower's corolla tube and the length of the tongue/proboscis of its specialised pollinator (so that only that pollinator can effectively access the nectar and, in doing so, transfers pollen efficiently), and the mutual relationship between fig trees and their specific fig-wasp pollinators.
