The reaction quotient Q has the same mathematical form as the equilibrium constant K, but Q can be evaluated at any point during a reaction (not only at equilibrium); comparing Q to K shows which direction the reaction will proceed.

Definition: For a general reversible reaction

aA+bB⇌cC+dDaA + bB \rightleftharpoons cC + dD

the reaction quotient is defined as:

Qc=[C]c[D]d[A]a[B]bQ_c = \dfrac{[C]^c[D]^d}{[A]^a[B]^b}

where the concentrations used are whatever is present in the reaction mixture at that particular instant (not necessarily equilibrium concentrations).

Significance: comparing QQ with the equilibrium constant KcK_c predicts the direction in which the reaction proceeds to reach equilibrium:

  • If Q<KcQ < K_c: the reaction proceeds in the forward direction (more products form). …
