According to the Bronsted-Lowry theory, when an acid donates a proton it becomes its conjugate base, and this acid-base pair — differing by exactly one H+H^+ — is called a conjugate acid-base pair.

For a Bronsted-Lowry acid-base reaction, HA+B⇌A−+HB+HA + B \rightleftharpoons A^- + HB^+: HAHA (the acid) loses a proton to become A−A^-, its conjugate base; and BB (the base) gains that proton to become HB+HB^+, its conjugate acid. HAHA/A−A^- form one conjugate acid-base pair, and HB+HB^+/BB form the other. For example, in the ionisation of acetic acid in water, CH3COOH+H2O⇌CH3COO−+H3O+CH_3COOH + H_2O \rightleftharpoons CH_3COO^- + H_3O^+, the pairs are CH3COOHCH_3COOH/CH3COO−CH_3COO^- (acid/conjugate base) and H3O+H_3O^+/H2OH_2O (acid/conjugat …
