Step 1 -- thermodynamics only, no kinetics. The Ellingham diagram is constructed entirely from thermodynamic (ΔG0) considerations. It can tell us WHETHER a given reduction is thermodynamically FEASIBLE (has negative ΔG) at a given temperature, but it gives absolutely no information about HOW FAST that reduction would actually proceed in practice -- a reaction can be thermodynamically favourable yet kinetically far too slow to be practically useful, and the diagram cannot distinguish this.

Step 2 -- no information on side reactions. Related to this, the diagram also gives no indication of the possibility of OTHER reactions that might be taking place alongside the one being considered -- it isolates one oxide-formation/reduction equilibrium at a time and says nothing about competing or parallel chemistry in a real furnace. …
