Uses of Organic Nitrogen Compounds
NITROALKANES: nitromethane is used as a fuel for cars; chloropicrin (CCl3NO2) is used as an insecticide; nitroethane is used as a fuel additive and as a precursor to explosives, and is a good solvent for polymers, cellulose esters, synthetic rubber and dyes; a 4% solution of ethyl nitrite in alcohol, known as 'sweet spirit of nitre', is used as a diuretic. NITROBENZENE: used to produce lubricating oils for motors and machinery, and in manufacturing dyes, drugs, pesticides, synthetic rubber, aniline, and explosives such as TNT and TNB. CYANIDES AND ISOCYANIDES: alkyl cyanides are important synthetic intermediates for a large range of compounds -- acids, amides, esters, amines, and more (as shown throughout Sections 13.4.2-13.4.4); n …
Worked out. A short applications box: Mitomycin C, an anticancer agent used to treat stomach and colon cancer, contains an aziridine ring (a three-membered nitrogen heterocycle). The aziridine functional group participates in the drug's degradation of DNA, resulting in the death of cancerous cells -- an example of an organic nitrogen compound with a direct pharmaceutical application, tying back to the chapter's opening theme of nitrogen compoun …
