In homogeneous catalysis, the catalyst is present in the same phase as the reactants, as in acid-catalysed ester hydrolysis in solution.

Catalysis is classified as homogeneous when the catalyst and all the reacting substances are present in the same physical phase (all gases, or all in one liquid solution), so that there is no visible phase boundary between the catalyst and the reactants.

Example (liquid phase): the acid-catalysed hydrolysis of ethyl acetate in aqueous solution:

CH3COOC2H5(l)+H2O(l)→  H+(aq)  CH3COOH(l)+C2H5OH(l)CH_3COOC_2H_5(l) + H_2O(l) \xrightarrow{\;H^+(aq)\;} CH_3COOH(l) + C_2H_5OH(l)

Here the ester, water and the H+H^+ catalyst (from a dilute mineral acid) are all dissolved in the same aqueous liquid phase.

Example (gas phase): the lead-chamber-process oxidation of sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide, catalysed by nitric oxide gas:

2SO2(g)+O2(g)→  NO(g)  2SO3(g)2SO_2(g) + O_2(g) \xrightarrow{\;NO(g)\;} 2SO_3(g)

Here the reactants (SO2SO_2, O2O_2) and the catalyst (NONO) are all gases, i.e. in the same phase.
