Mechanical dispersion (colloid mill): In this method a coarse solid is broken down directly to colloidal dimensions. The substance (graphite, or the carbon black used in ink) is mixed with the dispersion medium (water, with a small amount of a stabilising agent if needed) and passed into a colloid mill, which consists of two metal discs rotating very close together at high speed in opposite directions. The strong shearing force between the discs grinds the solid to colloidal-sized particles, producing the colloidal sol. …
