Matter waves are the wave nature associated with moving particles, with de Broglie wavelength λ=h/p\lambda=h/p, confirmed experimentally by electron diffraction.

Definition

Louis de Broglie proposed that just as light (traditionally a wave) exhibits particle-like behaviour (photons), material particles (traditionally particles) should also exhibit wave-like behaviour. The wave associated with a moving particle of momentum p=mvp=mv is called a matter wave (or de Broglie wave), with wavelength

λ=hp=hmv\lambda = \dfrac{h}{p} = \dfrac{h}{mv}

where hh is Planck's constant.
