Phosphor-bronze is used as the suspension wire because it offers a very small restoring torque per unit twist, which makes the galvanometer highly sensitive.

In a moving coil (mirror) galvanometer, the coil is suspended by a thin phosphor-bronze strip/fibre which also serves as one current lead and provides the restoring torque against the deflecting torque produced by the current-carrying coil in the magnetic field. At equilibrium, the deflecting torque NIABNIAB is balanced by the restoring torque CθC\theta of the suspension, where CC is the torsional constant (couple per unit twist) of the fibre.
