The magnetic Lorentz force F⃗=qv⃗×B⃗\vec F=q\vec v\times\vec B acts on a moving charge, always perpendicular to its velocity, so it changes only the direction (never the speed) of the charge's motion.

Expression

A charge qq moving with velocity v⃗\vec v in a magnetic field B⃗\vec B experiences a force

F⃗=q v⃗×B⃗\vec F = q\,\vec v\times\vec B

with magnitude F=qvBsin⁡θF=qvB\sin\theta, where θ\theta is the angle between v⃗\vec v and B⃗\vec B; its direction is given by the right-hand (screw) rule, perpendicular to both v⃗\vec v and B⃗\vec B.

Key features

  1. Zero force on a stationary charge or on motion parallel/antiparallel to B⃗\vec B (θ=0\theta=0 or 180°180°, so sin⁡θ=0\sin\theta=0).
  2. Always perpendicular to velocity -- since F⃗⊥v⃗\vec F\perp\vec v always, the force does no work on the charge (as W=F⃗⋅v⃗ dt=0W=\vec F\cdot\vec v\,dt=0); it changes only the direction, never the speed/kinetic energy, of the particle. …
