When a charge moves with velocity through a magnetic field , it experiences a magnetic Lorentz force , of magnitude , where is the angle between and . Its special features are:
-
It exists only for a moving charge. Unlike the electric force , which acts on a charge whether it is at rest or moving, the magnetic force is velocity-dependent: it is zero if the charge is at rest ().
-
It is perpendicular to both and . By the property of the cross product, always points in a direction normal to the plane containing and , given by the right-hand rule.
-
It does no work on the charge. Since is always perpendicular to (and hence to the displacement), the work done at every instant. The magnetic force can therefore change only the direction of motion of the charge, never its speed or kinetic energy.
-
It vanishes when is parallel or antiparallel to ( or , since ), and it is maximum when is perpendicular to (), giving — this is the condition under which a charged particle moves in a circular path in a uniform magnetic field.
