Gene therapy treats a genetic disease by delivering a healthy copy of a gene into a patient's cells, and can target either body cells or germ cells.

Definition: gene therapy is a technique used to correct defective genes responsible for disease development, by inserting a normal, functioning copy of the gene into the affected cells/tissues of an individual (often using a viral or other vector as the delivery vehicle). It was first successfully used in 1990 to treat a child with adenosine deaminase (ADA) deficiency, a form of severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID).
