In-situ conservation is defined as on-site conservation — protecting genetic resources within the natural populations of plant or animal species — carried out by protecting or restoring the species' natural habitat itself or by defending the species from predators, delivered through National Parks, Biosphere Reserves and Wildlife Sanctuaries.
Step 2. Ex-situ conservation instead places threatened animals and plants in special care locations outside their natural range, helping recover populations or prevent extinction under simulated conditions that closely resemble the species' natural habitat, delivered through zoological parks and botanical gardens, plus gene/seed banks and cryopreservation.
Step 3. The two approaches trade off different strengths: in-situ conservation protects the whole ecosystem and every species and interaction within it simultaneously, but depends on that habitat itself remaining intact and legally protected; ex-situ conservation can rescue a species even after its wild habitat is lost or its wild population becomes critically small, but it is resource-intensive and — as the chapter notes — not economically feasible to apply to every species and ecosystem that needs it. …
