A biosphere reserve is a large protected landscape that balances strict biodiversity conservation with sustainable human use, achieved through a characteristic three-zone design recognised internationally under UNESCO's Man and Biosphere Programme.

Characteristics of a biosphere reserve:

  • Representativeness: it covers a large area representative of one or more terrestrial, coastal or marine ecosystems, chosen to capture a region's characteristic biodiversity and landscape features.
  • Zonation into three interrelated areas:
    • Core zone: an undisturbed, legally protected area with minimal or no human interference, dedicated to conserving genetic resources, species, and ecosystems in their natural state; only non-destructive research/monitoring is permitted.
    • Buffer zone: surrounds or adjoins the core zone; limited activities such as scientific research, environmental education, recreation and eco-tourism are allowed here, cushioning the core from external pressures.
    • Transition (manipulation) zone: the outermost zone, where human settlements, agriculture, forestry and other economic activities continue, but are encouraged to follow sustainable practices in cooperation with local communities.
  • Functions: a biosphere reserve is designed to fulfil three linked roles - (1) conservation of landscapes, ecosystems, species and genetic variation; (2) development, i.e., fostering economic and human development that is ecologically and culturally sustainable; and (3) logistic support, providing a base for research, monitoring, education and training related to conservation and sustainable development.
  • In-situ conservation: unlike zoos or seed banks (ex-situ conservation), a biosphere reserve conserves species and genetic diversity within their natural habitat and ongoing evolutionary processes. …
