Pedogenesis is reproduction that occurs at the larval stage itself, before the organism becomes a sexually mature adult.

In typical animal life cycles, reproduction is a function of the adult stage reached after metamorphosis/growth. In pedogenesis, however, a larva reproduces asexually (often by internal budding) to give rise to new larvae while still in its own larval/juvenile form, without first developing into a mature adult -- a striking example being the paedogenetic larvae of certain gall midges (Cecidomyiidae, e.g., Miastor), where daughter larvae develop inside and eventually consume the parent larva.
