Plasmotomy is an asexual reproductive process in multinucleate protozoans in which the cytoplasm (and its existing nuclei) simply splits into daughter individuals without the nuclei first dividing.

In certain protozoans that are naturally multinucleate (containing many nuclei within a single mass of cytoplasm), such as Opalina, reproduction can occur by plasmotomy: the body constricts and divides into two or more smaller multinucleate fragments. Unlike multiple fission, where the nuclei divide repeatedly first and the cytoplasm then partitions around each resulting nucleus, in plasmotomy the pre-existing nuclei are simply distributed (not always equally) among the daughter individuals as the cytoplasm splits, with no new nuclear division occurring at the time of splitting.
