Step 1. Bacterial STIs. Gonorrhoea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae) affects the urethra, rectum and throat, causing pus discharge and burning urination. Syphilis (Treponema pallidum) progresses through primary (painless genital ulcer), secondary (skin rashes, swollen joints, fever) and tertiary (chronic ulcers, mental/visual/heart damage) stages. Chlamydiasis (Chlamydia trachomatis) causes trachoma-like infection of the urinogenital and respiratory tract. Lymphogranuloma venereum (also Chlamydia trachomatis) causes genital ulceration and elephantiasis.

Step 2. Viral STIs. Genital herpes causes painful sores around the genitalia and pain during urination. Genital warts (HPV) cause hard outgrowths on the genitalia. Hepatitis-B causes fatigue, jaundice, fever and can progress to liver cirrhosis/failure. AIDS (HIV) causes enlarged lymph nodes, prolonged fever/diarrhoea, weight loss and night sweats. …
