Over 1950-2010 India's GDP rose considerably, but employment grew only slowly, and the two grew further apart over time. Especially after the 1991 reforms, output expanded while job growth lagged — a situation called jobless growth — so employment generation was not commensurate with GDP growth.

Concept first

If an economy is healthy, growth in GDP (total output) should be accompanied by growth in employment (jobs). Comparing the two growth rates over 1950-2010 tells us whether India's growth has been employment-friendly.

What the period shows

  • GDP grew faster than employment: Through 1950-2010, and particularly in the later decades, GDP grew at a good pace, but the number of workers/jobs grew much more slowly.
