These six disorders span reduced oxygen-carrying capacity (anaemia), oxygen-starved heart muscle (angina), narrowed coronary arteries (atherosclerosis), chronically raised blood pressure (hypertension), an ineffectively pumping heart (heart failure), and Rh-antibody destruction of a foetus's red cells (erythroblastosis foetalis).

a. Anaemia. This is a condition of deficient red blood cells or haemoglobin, reducing the blood's capacity to carry oxygen; this chapter's own notes reference it specifically in connection with erythroblastosis foetalis, where a severely Rh-affected newborn can be left with severe anaemia.

b. Angina Pectoris. This is a symptom of acute chest pain that appears when not enough oxygen is reaching the heart muscle, occurring due to conditions affecting blood flow to the heart; it can affect people of any age but is more common among the middle-aged and elderly.

c. Atherosclerosis. Also known as coronary artery disease, this affects the vessels supplying the heart muscle, caused by deposits of calcium, fat, cholesterol and fibrous tissues on the vessel walls, which narrow the arterial lumen and reduce blood flow to the heart.

d. Hypertension. This is blood pressure higher than normal — repeated readings of 140/90 or above, compared with a normal 120/80 — and it can lead to heart disease and damage vital organs such as the brain and the kidney. …
