The frog's blood vascular system includes two special venous routes, the hepatic portal system and the renal portal system, which channel blood from the intestine to the liver, and from the lower part of the body to the kidney, respectively, before it rejoins the general circulation.

Unlike a simple, direct return of blood from body organs to the heart, the frog's circulatory system includes certain detours called portal systems, in which blood collected from one region is routed through a second organ before continuing on. Blood absorbing nutrients from the intestine is not sent straight back to the heart; instead it passes first through the hepatic portal system into the liver, allowing the liver to process, store or modify these absorbed substances (such as regulating nutrient levels) before the blood re-enters general circulation. …
