Q.Classify each of the following six compounds as aromatic or non-aromatic according to Huckel's rule, and state which of them are aromatic: (A) naphthalene, two fused benzene rings; (B) pyrrole, a planar five-membered ring made of four CH carbons and one N-H group, the nitrogen carrying a lone pair; (C) para-quinodimethane, i.e. 1,4-bis(methylidene)cyclohexa-2,5-diene, a six-membered ring bearing two ring C=C double bonds and two exocyclic =CH2 groups (H2C=C6H4=CH2); (D) naphthalene, two fused benzene rings; (E) 1,2-dihydronaphthalene, a benzene ring fused to a six-membered ring that contains one C=C double bond and a -CH2-CH2- unit; (F) [14]annulene, a planar fully conjugated monocyclic ring of fourteen carbons carrying seven alternating C=C double bonds.

Using Huckel's rule (cyclic + planar + complete pi delocalisation + (4n+2) pi electrons), naphthalene (A and D, 10 pi electrons), pyrrole (B, 6 pi electrons) and [14]annulene (F, 14 pi electrons) are aromatic. p-Quinodimethane (C) has exocyclic =CH2 groups and is a non-aromatic quinoid, and 1,2-dihydronaphthalene (E) contains two sp3 carbons that interrupt conjugation, so both are non-aromatic.

Concept

A compound is aromatic when it is cyclic, planar, has a continuous ring of overlapping unhybridised p-orbitals (complete pi delocalisation) and contains (4n+2) pi electrons (n = 0, 1, 2, ...). Any sp3 carbon in the ring, or double bonds pointing out of the ring, breaks the closed conjugated loop and removes aromaticity.

Compound by compound

(A) Naphthalene - two fused benzene rings, planar and fully conjugated; 10 pi electrons = 4n+2 (n = 2) -> aromatic.

(B) Pyrrole - planar five-membered ring; the two ring C=C bonds give 4 pi electrons and the nitrogen lone pair sits in an unhybridised p-orbital contributing 2 more = 6 pi electrons = 4n+2 (n = 1) -> aromatic.

(C) para-Quinodimethane, H2C=C6H4=CH2 - the ring carries two exocyclic =CH2 double bonds, giving a cross-conjugated quinoid rather than a closed (4n+2) loop within the ring -> non-aromatic.

(D) Naphthalene (drawn a second time) - identical to (A), 10 pi electrons -> aromatic. …
