Q.Reena and Raman are partners with capitals of ₹3,00,000 and ₹1,00,000 respectively. The profit for the year ended March 31, 2020 was ₹1,80,000, before paying rent for her personal building to be used as godown for firm to Reena payable at ₹5,000 per month. Interest on capital is to be allowed at 6% p.a. Raman was entitled to a salary of ₹30,000 p.a. The drawings of partners were ₹30,000 and ₹20,000. The interest on drawings to be charged to Reena was ₹1,000 and to Raman, ₹500. Assuming that Reena and Raman are equal partners, state their share of profit after necessary appropriations. Note: Payment of Rent to Reena is an expense for the business. Hence, it is a charge against profits.

After interest on capital and Raman's salary, Reena and Raman split the rest equally at ₹33,750 each.
Concept
Rent paid to a partner for the firm's use of their personal property is exactly like rent paid to any outside landlord — a genuine business expense, charged in the Profit and Loss Account before the firm's distributable profit is even known. It must never be confused with an appropriation (interest on capital, salary, commission), which comes later, only out of what's left.
Working Notes
Rent to Reena: ₹5,000 × 12 = ₹60,000 (a charge, deducted first).
Net profit for appropriation: ₹1,80,000 − ₹60,000 = ₹1,20,000.
Interest on capital (6% p.a.): Reena 6% of ₹3,00,000 = ₹18,000; Raman 6% of ₹1,00,000 = ₹6,000.
